Can Your Windshield Chip Be Repaired?

Can Your Windshield Chip Be Repaired?

An honest guide from Boise's chip-repair specialists. We do chip repair only — no replacements. If we can't fix it, we'll tell you.

The Short Answer

In most cases, yes — the majority of windshield rock chips can be repaired, quickly and on-site, often at no cost to you through insurance. But not all damage qualifies. This page is the honest diagnostic from a Boise shop that does chip repair only and doesn't have a financial reason to push you toward a replacement you may not need.

What We Can Repair

Most rock chips meet repair criteria when they're:

  • Roughly quarter-sized or smaller — that includes star-breaks (small radial cracks), bullseyes (round impact craters with a clear center), and combination breaks.
  • Outside the driver's primary line of sight — small chips directly in front of the driver's eyes can technically be filled but may leave a faint visible blemish that's distracting; we'll discuss whether it's worth doing.
  • Not on the windshield's outer edge — the edge is the strongest-loaded part of the windshield's structure, and damage there usually compromises the seal.
  • Reasonably fresh — chips repaired within days are far more likely to leave a clean result than chips that have sat full of dirt and moisture for months.

A successful repair structurally seals the chip, restores most of the lost strength to the windshield, and makes the damage significantly less visible — never invisible. Anyone who promises a chip will completely disappear is overselling.

What We Can't Repair (And What You'll Need Instead)

We're a chip-repair shop. We don't do replacements — and that means we'll never push you toward one you don't need. It also means there are some kinds of damage we can't help with:

  • Cracks longer than about three inches — short cracks can sometimes be repaired, but anything beyond palm-length usually needs replacement.
  • Damage that has reached the inner glass layer — windshields are laminated; once both glass layers are compromised, structural integrity is gone.
  • Edge cracks — a crack that touches or starts from the windshield's edge typically can't be safely repaired.
  • Long-neglected chips full of debris — chips that have been collecting moisture, dirt, and brake dust for months may not bond properly with the repair resin.

If your damage falls in any of those buckets, we'll tell you up front before we start anything. We don't make money on a repair that can't structurally hold, and we won't waste your time. We'll also point you to a reputable Treasure Valley shop that handles full replacements — the local replacement market is well-served, and we'd rather see you get the right work done somewhere else than try to force a repair that won't last.

Side, Rear, and Back Glass

We don't repair side windows, rear windows, or back glass. Side and rear glass is tempered— designed to shatter into small pebbles when broken — which means there's no chip to repair; the whole pane has either failed or it hasn't. Same with sunroofs. If you've got broken side or rear glass, you need a full glass replacement, and we'll point you to a shop that does that. Our work is windshield rock chip repair only.

The Three Factors That Determine Repairability

When we look at a chip in person, three things drive the decision:

1. Size. Quarter-sized or smaller is the rule of thumb. A bullseye that fits under a quarter coin is usually a clean candidate. A star-break with arms longer than two inches starts to push the limits.

2. Location.Chips on the outer edge or directly in front of the driver's eyes need a closer look. The edge is structural; the driver's line of sight is about visibility after repair. We'll honestly assess both.

3. Time and condition.A fresh chip, kept dry and clean, repairs cleanest. An old chip that's been driven through rainstorms, car washes, and Idaho winters may have moisture and contaminants in it that prevent a strong bond. The earlier you book, the better the outcome.

How to Know Before You Book

You don't have to be sure your chip is repairable to book. That's our job to assess. But here's a quick at-home check:

  • Hold a quarter coin over the damage — if it covers the whole chip, you're probably in repair territory.
  • Run a fingernail across it — if it's a clean dot or short star, that's a chip; a long line that catches your nail across several inches is a crack.
  • Check whether the damage is on the outermost edge of the windshield — if it's within an inch of the edge, replacement is more likely.

If you're unsure, just book the assessment. We don't charge to look. If it's not repairable, we'll tell you, recommend a replacement shop, and you can decide what to do from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the chip completely disappear after repair?

No, and anyone who tells you it will is overselling. A well-done repair makes the chip significantly less visible and structurally seals it, but a faint mark may remain. The real point of a repair is structural — preventing the chip from spreading into a crack that needs full replacement.

Does insurance cover rock chip repair?

Most comprehensive auto insurance policies cover rock chip repair, often at no out-of-pocket cost, because insurers know a chip repair beats a much more expensive replacement they'd otherwise have to cover later. Coverage depends on your specific insurer and policy. We can verify your coverage at booking.

How long does a repair take?

Most chip repairs take 20 to 30 minutes on-site at your home, work, or wherever your vehicle is parked.

What if you can't repair it?

We'll tell you up front before doing any work, explain why, and point you to a Treasure Valley shop that handles windshield replacements. We don't do replacements ourselves.

What does it cost if I'm paying out of pocket?

Standard chip repair is around $60 for the first chip; additional chips on the same windshield are discounted. No fuel surcharge inside our standard Treasure Valley service area.

Not sure if your chip qualifies? We'll take an honest look — at no charge.
